Milwaukee County is where I have lived the last 15 years, so it was a great privilege to be able to work on this project. Milwaukee County is a Midwestern hub for business, travel, industry, recreation, and culture. A strong sense of community makes Milwaukee County a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
The challenge with this project was coming up with a solution to organize a massive amount of information across many websites. Milwaukee County has 1 main website with over 20 different department websites. This presented a huge UI/UX challenge that desperately needed a solution. The challenge from a design and front-end development standpoint was deciding how to create all of the websites so they have cohesive look and feel. While they all needed a cohesive look and feel they also needed to share page templates.
This website utilized a strong and very prominent search bar so that users can quickly search for what they need. This website uses a megamenu that separates different types of content out into different tabs. The menu system uses iconography and photography to lessen the burden on the users' eye while browsing the website.
The front-end solution was to create two main themes: the main website theme and a department theme. The main website uses unique code specific to the main website only while the department theme shares the same page templates and code snippets throughout all 20 websites. There were 5 different color themes developed within the department theme that was assigned to each department based on the functionality of that department.
